The Next Right Thing

An interviewer asks, “If a person wants to grow spiritually, what would your advice be? Where should they start?”

Dallas Willard answered simply, “Do the next right thing you know you ought to do.”

So often we know what we should be doing. But we don’t do it.

Instead of listening to the voice in our own head that knows what we should be doing, we explain it away. We’re too busy. We’re too frustrated. Our space is too distracting with all its clutter. Or is it our brains that are too full of clutter.

Regardless, we have hundreds of excuses for why we aren’t doing the thing we know we should be doing.

So how’s that working out?

Yeah. I know. It’s not good for me either.

Could the answer be as simple as just doing the next right thing?
