One Thing — In Your Closet

Go to your bedroom closet.

Now is good. This shouldn't take long. If you're putting this off because it will be too hard, this is a sign that you need to do this sooner than later.

The beginning of a new season is the perfect time to clear out clothes that you didn't wear last season. But if trying to figure out whether to keep something is too hard for you to do, consider this reliable tip.

Turn your hangers so that all the hooks are pointing towards you. In other words, the opposite way from your normal hanging. Then when you wear something and put it away again, hang it back the normal way.

If you take it down, and decide not to wear it, that doesn't count. In that case, put the hanger back the wrong way. There's a reason you put it back. No cheating.

At the end of the season, you can pull out anything on hangers that are still backwards. With very few exceptions, you should let go of anything you didn't wear.

Yes. I've put an alarm on my calendar to remind you next spring. Really.

We can talk then about whether you should keep that favorite top. You know the one I mean. The one you still call favorite, even though you didn't wear it in the last six months.

For now, just go turn your hangers around.
